Gerrard in Istanbul voted Kop Cup winner

Steven Gerrard‘s performance in the 2005 Champions League Final against AC Milan has been voted the best individual Liverpool player performance in the TIA Kop Cup.

Gerrard won 72% of the votes in the final against Ian Rush‘s FA Cup Final double goal scoring exploits at Wembley against Everton in 1986.

Here’s what some of the members said:

Red Wave:

Gerrard. Personally, I think the best performance I’ve ever seen is Stevie in Cardiff last year, but this is a fairly close second. To score two in a cup final, against the Blueshite is great, but to do what Stevie did on the greatest stage of all, a European Cup Final, 3-0 down at half time, was phenominal.

DragonShadow argued the case for Rush:

I’ve gone for Rush. It was an inspired performance (not to say that Gerrards wasn’t though) against our mortal enemies and near neighbours, and a performance that gave us our first ever Double.

But maybe Kev Arne Riise summed up the vote perfectly:

If only more older fans knew how to use the Internet. This might have been a contest.

Gerrard’s performance was voted ahead of his 2006 FA Cup Final performance (the two met in the quarter finals) and other stand out displays such as Robbie Fowler’s fastest Premiership hat trick against Arsenal and Rush’s other Cup Final performance in 1989.

It’s a tough call, because the CL Final of 2005 was simply amazing – but then so was the All Merseyside FA Cup Final of 19 years previous.
