There’s doubt over the full extent of Xabi Alonso’s latest injury setback, which saw him need seven stitches to his instep during Liverpool’s 0-2 victory at Preston North End in the FA Cup on Saturday evening.

Alonso limped off in the last few seconds of the first half and was substituted at half time for Lucas Leiva.

After the game, assistant boss Sammy Lee revealed that the club are still waiting for news on the Spanish midfielder’s injury. He said, “We do not know the full extent of the injury, apart from the fact he will be very sore tonight.

“Hopefully there will be no damage but we won’t know for the next 24 or 48 hours.”
