Rafa hails character to go top

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has praised his side’s character and mentality after making an extraordinary comeback to beat Portsmouth 2-3 at Fratton Park today and return to the top of the Premier League table.

Despite going behind twice, Liverpool hit back thanks to goals from Fabio Aurelio, Dirk Kuyt, and a 92nd minute winner from Fernando Torres.

The result puts the Reds back on top of the league, a point clear of second placed Manchester United who have two games in hand, and five points clear of third place Chelsea.

Benitez said after the game, “I had confidence because the team was showing great character – they decided to win,” said the boss, after goals from Fabio Aurelio, Dirk Kuyt and Torres secured victory.

“The team’s mentality is very good and confidence is high, and these things will be very important for the rest of the season.

“We knew it could be difficult to stay at the top for a long time but we are there. If we are in this position in the last month, we’ll be able to fight for the title.”

The Reds return to Premier League action after the internationals break when they take on Manchester City at Anfield on February 22nd (kick-off 3pm).
