Liverpool Reserves overcome Man Utd challenge

Liverpool Reserves went through to the quarter-finals of the Lancashire Senior Cup last night with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Manchester Utd Reserves at Moss Lane.

Just 24 hours after making his debut for the first team in the Carling Cup exit at Arsenal, Nathan Eccleston gave the Reds’ Reserves a first half lead with a cool finish.

But Zoran Tosic cancelled out Eccleston’s opener with a well-taken goal from a free-kick late on to send the game to penalties.

Reserves goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis saved two penalties to help the Reds finish the game in style with Irwin, Ayala, Mavinga and Eccleston slotting away their penalities for the Reds.

John McMahon’s side next face Merseyside rivals Everton Reserves in the Barclays Premier Reserve League North at Halton Stadium in Widness on November 3rd (kick-off 7pm).

Manchester United Reserves: Zieler, Brown (Macheda 65), Dudgeon, Evans, Gill, De Laet, Stewart, Hewson (Tosic 58), King, Norwood (James 58), Brandy.

Liverpool Reserves: Bouzanis, Darby, Threlfall, Ayala, Mavinga, Irwin, Eccleston, Amoo, Saric (Mendy 81), Palsson (Weijl 65), Kacaniklic. Subs: Hansen, Kohlert, Brouwer.
