Denmark 0-2 Netherlands
Liverpool defender Daniel Agger was the scorer of a freak own-goal against his country this afternoon as Denmark went down 2-0 to Holland in their opening World Cup game.
After a goalless first half at Soccer City, Danish defender Simon Poulson woefully messed up clearing a Robin van Persie cross. His scuffed header diverted the ball back towards goal, going in off a helpless Agger.
Holland showed some frantic, but exciting attacking football in the second half, holding off a frustrated Danish team.
With minutes left, Reds striker Dirk Kuyt followed up Eljero Elia’s shot which was tipped onto the post by Thomas Sorenson to double Holland’s lead.
Kuyt is the second Liverpool player to score at the World Cup finals in South Africa, after Steven Gerrard scored for England in their 1-1 draw with the USA on Saturday.
