Tuesday’s Rumours: Torres bid, Cole and Figueroa

What do you get when it’s the summer, England are out of the World Cup, and Wimbledon is over? Lots of empty newspaper sport pages for the Cockney journalists to fill, that’s what.

Doing the round this morning in most of the papers is the story that Chelsea and Roman Abramovich have tabled a £55million bid for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

Torres faces a World Cup semi-final against Germany with Spain on Wednesday night, so the timing of this isn’t exactly perfect for anyone.

The reports suggest Liverpool value the striker at around £70million, but the lure of Champions League football from the Blues could be enough to tempt him away from Anfield.

Anything to sell a few papers, eh?

Elsewhere, the Daily Mail reports that Roy Hodgson’s first target as new Reds boss will be out-of-contract former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole who is due to enter discussions with several clubs in the next two weeks.

Cole, who was part of England’s dismal World Cup campaign in South Africa, is also thought to have attracted the attention of both Arsenal and Tottenham, who can offer him Champions League action and keep him grounded in London.

And finally, the Daily Mail also reports that Hodgson is ready to table a £6million bid for Wigan left-back Maynor Figueroa.

The Reds are lacking in options in the left-back position, with Emiliano Insua the club’s only recognised accomplished left-back after Fabio Aurelio’s contract with the club expired.

Figueroa was involved in this year’s World Cup with Honduras.
