Sentiments not an issue in Carroll fitness race

Andy Carroll faces a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League clash at home to his former club Newcastle Utd this Sunday.

The Geordie born strike will be hoping to face his former teammates for the first time since his £35million move from St James’ Park to Anfield in January, but is struggling with a knee problem.

Carroll missed Liverpool’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Birmingham City, whilst Reds boss Kenny Dalglish says no risks will be taken – even for the sentiments that Sunday’s game entails.

“It’s only Thursday and there’s a few days to go yet,” said Dalglish.

“I don’t think nature knows it is Newcastle so if he’s not fit, he’s not fit. For Andy it is a poignant game but if he’s not fit we can’t do anything about that.”

Liverpool vs Newcastle Utd gets underway at 12noon this Sunday, 1st May.
