Shelvey on target as Reserves finish third

Jonjo Shelvey was on target for Liverpool Reserves tonight as they were held 2-2 by Manchester United Reserves, to end the season third in the Barclays Reserve League North.

There were a number of senior players in the side with Liverpool’s Under 18’s playing on Friday morning, with Christian Poulsen and David N’gog also playing.

United took the lead on 18 minutes through Nicolas Ajose, only to be cancelled out by Shelvey’s strike just after the half hour mark – an unstoppable strike set up by Joe Cole.

It was a close game with chances for both sides, and Liverpool almost won it when they took the lead when Cole’s shot defelected off Nikola Saric to give the Reds a fortunate lead.

But United got a late equaliser just minutes from time when Gabriel Obertan followed up Oliver Norwood’s free-kick which hit the post.

Liverpool finish third in the Reserve league.

Liverpool Reserves: Chamberlain, Mendy, Irwin, Wilson, Wisdom, Poulsen, Shelvey, Ince, Suso, Cole, Ngog (Saric 45). Subs not used: Stephens, Roberts, Sokolik, Peterson.
