Liverpool agree fee for Jose Enrique

Spanish left-back Jose Enrique is set to become Liverpool’s fifth major signing of the summer after Liverpool agreed a fee, thought to be around £6million, with Newcastle Utd.

Enrique has been a Reds target for some time, with former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson even claiming a deal was done and dusted as early as May.

But it looks as if Enrique will put pen to paper on a contract at Anfield in the next few hours, just two days before the start of the new Premier League season.

Liverpool have been in much need of a left-back with Fabio Aurelio and Emiliano Insua the squad’s only two established left-backs.

A statement on Liverpool FC’s official website reads, “Liverpool FC confirmed today that they had agreed a fee with Newcastle United for the transfer of Jose Enrique.

“The club have now been given permission to discuss personal terms with the player, who will travel to Liverpool to undergo a medical.”

Enrique, 25, brings with him Premier League experience at St James’ Park, where he signed in 2007 for £6.3million and currently has just one year remaining on his contract in the North East.

He will team back up with Andy Carroll who left Tyneside for Merseyside in the January transfer window.

Enrique recently hit out at the way Newcastle Utd is being run on social networking site, Twitter. He said, “The club is allowing all the major players of the team to go. Seriously, do you think it is the fault of the players? Andy [Carroll], Nobby [Kevin Nolan)] etc etc.”

More updates on Enrique’s imminent signing as we get news…
