Liverpool notched up their ninth goal in two games as they swept aside Wigan Athletic 4-0 at the DW Stadium on Saturday evening to keep up the chase for European places with ten games of the season to go.

Stewart Downing opened the scoring for the Reds inside three minutes when Philippe Coutinho‘s cross met the winger unmarked in the center. Downing leapt to head in a rare aerial goal in another great performance for the number 19.

Luis Suarez then bagged a hat-trick with two clinical finishes in front of goal and a double slice of luck when his free-kick was deflected twice to sneak in.

The traveling Kop had a party with Philippe Countinho’s name being sung, along with a chorus of support for under-fire former boss Rafa Benitez, now at Chelsea.

Brendan Rodgers’ men now face Tottenham at home next Sunday afternoon at Anfield – a win could see them go level on points with sixth placed Everton, who are in FA Cup action.
