Liverpool to play post-season friendly in South Africa

Not satisfied with pre-season tours across the world, Liverpool look like becoming the latest club to travel across the globe for a post-season promotional match.

A report in South African media quotes a Cape Town City spokesman as saying that they have conditionally approved the game.

Should the match be finalised, the report claims Liverpool will face Ajax Cape Town on May 21st in Cape Town. However, given that the Reds play QPR at Anfield on 19th May and that travel to Cape Town takes a full day, that date seems unlikely.

The ‘Urban Warriors’ have former keeper Sander Westerveld in their squad. The friendly is expected to be played at the 30,000 seater Athlone Stadium.

The match will likely be the next time Luis Suarez will appear for Liverpool – although captain Steven Gerrard would miss the game due to a shoulder operation he will undergo at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have confirmed they will play in Indonesia as part of their pre-season tour this summer.
