Realistically, who would you buy for Liverpool, if you were Rodgers?

I’m sure I’m not the only one who puts themself in the position of the Liverpool manager now and then again, and think who I would buy, if I had the powers to! So this article will not only be about who I would buy for Liverpool, but to also see other people’s opinions on who they would buy too. It is reported that Brendan Rodgers has been given a £20 million kitty for the summer, and it is no secret we need to strengthen our current squad.

Starting with outgoings, with Jamie Carragher retiring, it is number one priority we buy a centre back. I would keep both Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates, which not everyone will agree with, but Skrtel was out player of the season last season, which has to count towards something, and Coates is still only 22, I think getting rid at such a young age would not be a smart move, however I do think a loan move would be very beneficial to him.

To replace Carragher at centre back I would like to see Ashley Williams sign, as not only has he got the relationship with Rodgers, he seems very calm and in control, which may also help Agger to exploit his talents of pushing forward now and again, by having a reassuring centre back partner such as Williams.

In midfield I think Spearing should be sold, which would be a shame for the local lad, but I think Allen, Shelvey and Lucas alongside Gerrard are all superior to Spearing, so he would hardly get a look in. Based on his age, and his good form for Bolton this season I think we could receive around £4 million for him. He would also have less of a chance with my second signing for the summer, Xabi Alonso. Some people do not think it is a possible move, but I am still believing it may happen, and not only is he one of the best in his position in the world, the impact his signature would have on fans and players alike would be incredibly positive.

I would also like to see us make a move for Japanese midfielder Keisuke Honda, as his contract is expiring in the summer. I think a player of Honda’s ability would be such as shame to turn down for free, plus he would bring some flair to the Liverpool midfield. Not only that, but the shirt sales in Japan would be incredibly high, and promote Liverpool’s image across Asia, which would only benefit the club.

Another player available for a free this summer is FC Twente’s Brazilian centre-back, Douglas, who is currently being looked at by Newcastle United.

As for attacking players, I think a few would benefit from loan moves, such as Sterling and Suso, to maybe play in a slightly lower league, to therefore get more game time, but at the same time to not throw them out of their depth. I think we maybe need to keep Sterling as back up and to have depth in our squad, but it may help Suso, maybe even to return home to his native Spain for a year, which is also where I think Pacheco will end up too, due to lack of first team chances over the years.

When Andy Carroll’s loan finishes, I would not get rid of him. He needs to be given a proper chance, and in the past few weeks, he has shown how much of a threat he can be, he would be like a brand new signing for us. I think a player like himself is what we need, someone that can double the threat of just Suarez alone, whilst being a completely different player. Plus if we had great passers in the team such as Gerrard and Alonso, they would just take full advantage of his height, and he is bound to score goals.

Other positions I would like to see us strengthen up in is a goalkeeper for back up, such as Shay Given from Aston Villa, if they are to go down. If we can also exploit QPR who seemed doomed to go down, I would like to see us nab Adel Taarabt for a cut price, to give us that spark of extra creativity and excitement.
