Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard announced his retirement from professional football on Thursday, prompting considerable praise.
Gerrard left MLS franchise LA Galaxy earlier in November, and subsequently moved to confirm that would be his last playing role in a statement on Thursday morning.
“I am excited about the future and feel I still have a lot to offer the game, in whatever capacity that may be,” he said.
“I am currently taking my time to consider a number of options and will make an announcement with regards to the next stage of my career very soon.”
The midfielder’s playing career spanned 19 years, with 17 of those spent in the Liverpool first team and 12 years as captain of his boyhood club, and his heroics for the Reds have warranted widespread appreciation on his retirement.
Here’s the best from social media, as supporters react to Gerrard’s announcement.

#LFC and @England legend Steven Gerrard retires. The word 'legend' is used too freely these days, but is truly warranted in his case #YNWA

Single-handedly carried Liverpool for years, one of the reasons why LFC signed class players too. Who knows where we'd be if he left early
