Liverpool striker Divock Origi has set his sights on being not only a leader of the line but a go-to man in the team after scoring his first Premier League goal for three months.
With the regular injuries to Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings‘ season being ended by a knee problem the Belgium international would have hoped to have had more game time than he has.
Instead Jurgen Klopp has preferred Roberto Firmino in the number nine role, even though he is not a natural centre-forward, and that has impacted on Origi.
After scoring in four successive matches in November and December the 21-year-old ended his league drought—he scored in the FA Cup—with the vital third goal in the weekend Merseyside derby win over Everton.
He hopes to be able to contribute more in their pursuit of Champions League football but he has a longer-term aim of being the man Klopp can rely on regularly.
“Of course I am very ambitious and believe in my qualities and I am ready to do whatever but you have to show everything on the pitch and you have to respect the decision of the coach,” Origi said.
“I think as a striker you always want to score so I am happy but I wouldn’t say a weight has been lifted.
“I am very happy to score but it motivates me to do even more.”
“My goal is to be a leader in this team and I think it is very possible so I won’t rest until I reach my goal and when I reach my goals I set other goals,” he continued.
“I don’t think there is anything to prove for myself. I set the bar high, I am very ambitious and I want to play a big part in this team.
“I have to play with my qualities. The manager knows my qualities so it is for me to just stay calm and stay cool in the head.
“The manager has different choices with me, Daniel and Firmino. The main thing for me is that I can be an option and it is up to the manager to choose.
“I feel very ready, I feel good and fit. I feel even better than last year so for me it is giving everything every minute I can get.”
