Championship outfit Burton Albion are reported to be preparing a season-long loan bid for Liverpool U23s captain Harry Wilson this summer.
Wilson has been in excellent form for the young Reds this season, ending the campaign as top scorer, having struck 28 times in all competitions.
This has seen him recognised at international level, having been called up to Chris Coleman’s Wales squad for the March break, and looks to have established himself for the senior side.
Despite this, he has made just one appearance for Liverpool first team, playing 25 minutes in January’s 1-0 win away to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup third round.
With the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ovie Ejaria and Ben Woodburn accelerated into the first-team setup this season at his expense, Wilson faces a decisive summer.
And according to Sky Sports News, ex-Reds striker Nigel Clough is looking to bring Wilson to the Pirelli Stadium as part of his Burton squad for 2017/18.
They claim that Wilson has joined MK Dons midfielder Ben Reeves and Fulham centre-forward Cauley Woodrow on Clough’s list of targets.
This would seemingly be on a temporary basis, which could suit Wilson as he continues his progress as a young player.
It is likely that Clough has begun planning for next season, with Burton having secured their place in the Championship through a 20th-placed finish.
And the 51-year-old will be looking to strengthen, as the Brewers look to build on their stable first season in the English second tier, and Wilson would be a worthwhile addition.
Whether Liverpool will sanction his departure remains to be seen, with Klopp’s squad having already qualified for next season’s Europa League, with sights set on the Champions League.
Fighting on four fronts would provide more opportunities for the Reds’ fringe players and young talents, and Wilson could hope to break through in domestic cup competitions.
Whether Sky Sports are to be believed remains to be seen, having already linked Kevin Stewart with a number of clubs, too.
But at this stage of the season, as clubs who have already avoid relegation such as Burton continue to plan for the future, it is feasible that targets will have already been drawn up.
Joining Burton should be a productive move for Wilson—as Stewart can attest, having spent a month on loan there in 2015.
