Jurgen Klopp considering whether to loan Joe Gomez to Premier League club

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez could join another Premier League club on loan this summer, if it is deemed to be in the youngster’s best interest.

Due to a series of injuries including a ruptured ACL suffered in 2015, Gomez has made just three first-team appearances for the Reds since Jurgen Klopp’s appointment.

These all came last season in the FA Cup, twice against Plymouth Argyle and once against Wolves, with the majority of his action in 2016/17 coming with the Liverpool Under-23s.

This has led to speculation over a possible move for the 20-year-old, and according to the Liverpool Echo, Gomez could well leave the club on loan.

Newcastle United, Huddersfield Town and Bournemouth are all credited with an interest, with Gomez’s burgeoning quality already drawing attention from clubs in the top flight.

This would be imperative if Klopp is to sanction a departure for the former Charlton Athletic defender, with a move to a fellow Premier League side under consideration if it aids Gomez’s development.

However, Gomez will first be provided the opportunity to impress his manager during a busy pre-season.

Liverpool are set to kick off their summer preparations away with Tranmere Rovers in July, with the last of a possible nine clashes coming against Athletic Bilbao in Dublin on August 5.

This serves as another busy pre-season for the Reds, and acts as a primer for a campaign that will see Klopp’s side turn out in the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and one of the Champions League or Europe League.

Given the increased schedule Liverpool are set to face, Gomez could be required to supplement the likes of Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan.

But having already seen a move for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk crumble bitterly, it is clear that Klopp is targeting a leading centre-back to bolster his side’s four-pronged charge in 2017/18.

This could see Gomez shunted down the pecking order, unless he impresses during pre-season, and if that is the case a move away could allow him to progress before returning to compete at Anfield.

Joining Rafa Benitez at Newcastle or David Wagner at Huddersfield could be beneficial given their links to Liverpool and Klopp respectively.

Meanwhile, Chelsea centre-back Nathan Ake’s successful loan spell with Bournemouth in the first half of last season highlights the opportunity for Gomez under Eddie Howe at Dean Court, too.
