Liverpool cruised to a 4-1 opening-day victory over Norwich on Friday night, and although fans were delighted, Alisson‘s injury caused concern.
Liverpool 4-1 Norwich
Premier League, Anfield
August 9, 2019
Goals: Hanley OG 7′, Salah 19′, Van Dijk 28′, Origi 42′; Pukki 64′
Jurgen Klopp‘s side returned to Anfield for the first time since lifting the European Cup, but didn’t rest on their laurels, producing a scintillating attacking display to cruise to a straightforward win.
Grant Hanley’s own goal got the ball rolling, before efforts from Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Divock Origi put Liverpool 4-0 up at half-time.
Teemu Pukki pulled a goal back in a low-key second half, but it was still a positive night for Klopp’s men, barring Alisson‘s first-half injury.
Here’s how Liverpool fans reacted to the result on Twitter, Facebook and on our forums.
The performance was largely applauded, even thought it fizzled out slightly…
Back with a bang. 3pts. Defensive relapses to iron out, but brought on by Norwich’s forward-thinking. Origi deserves big credit, Salah & Henderson sharp. Props to Adrian for handling the occasion. Alisson to have a scan tomorrow. #LFCdigest

Liverpool starts the new season with a 4-1 win. Anfield was resplendent, with just a subtle reference to our recent glory. #6times pic.twitter.com/xJOfrqmsNM

A number of players shone, but Firmino earned the most praise…
Attack wise, everyone was incredibly sharp. Firmino especially impressive with a lovely dink to Salah who’s off the mark already and Origi causing problems down the flank. Will only improve when Mane is back in the side.

Good to have football back and see Firmino ballin and VVD being VVD. Top of the league, let's stay there.
— Dinesh Kumar (@DHardayal) August 9, 2019
Games such as these make me realise why Firmino’s my favourite player. Subtle genius.

12 – Liverpool have now won their last 12 Premier League games against newly-promoted sides, scoring 35 goals and conceding just four. Inevitable. pic.twitter.com/UoYsFhuzQt

Bobby didn't score but I thought he was really really good. Very sharp and alert all game. Understandably got tired later on but quality.
— Red (@TaintlessRed) August 9, 2019
Front 3 cracking, Fab & Hendo doing the business. Defence still getting sharp to be kind ?.

Alisson’s injury gave cause for concern, but debutant Adrian received support…
Really hope Alisson isn't badly hurt!
Have full faith in Adrian though #LFC

Not what we needed to see on the opening day of the season ? #Liverpoolfc #Alisson pic.twitter.com/e5rSNBITzs

No sign of the party ending at Anfield yet. Alisson injury only concern. 4-1. NEXT: Istanbul.
— Chris Bascombe (@_ChrisBascombe) August 9, 2019
“Gutted that Alisson has a knock. Hopefully nothing serious!”
– Kwala on the forums.
Adrian has played more PL minutes since arriving at the club four days ago than Simon Mignolet did in the whole of 2018/19. ?
Alisson was an ever-present. This is his first injury since joining the club…. ?#LFC pic.twitter.com/o5DZyiGjyD

#LFC far from perfect tonight and yet they start the season with a 4-1 win that never looked in doubt. The only downside is that Alisson injury but, if it's a muscle issue as initially suspected, hopefully he won't require too long a lay-off.
— David Lynch (@davidlynchlfc) August 9, 2019
A good start from Liverpool. Slightly soured by Alisson's injury. If you're being perfectionist, some loose defending & not ruthless or intense enough in the 2nd half. Hopefully Alisson back soon & even better to come. #LFC

The Reds’ defending wasn’t wholly convincing, particularly when it came to Trent…
Back with a bang. 3pts. Defensive relapses to iron out, but brought on by Norwich’s forward-thinking. Origi deserves big credit, Salah & Henderson sharp. Props to Adrian for handling the occasion. Alisson to have a scan tomorrow. #LFCdigest

Thought Firmino was absolutely superb. Movement, first touch, work rate. So important to this team
— keith costigan (@KeithCostigan) August 9, 2019
“Bring back Matip and rotate Trent and Gomez at full-back.”
– Paul Heffernan on Facebook.
Certainly positives, but I don't think i've ever been concerned by a 4-1 victory before. Improvement needed defensively #LFC
— Jack Williams (@JLWi11iams) August 9, 2019
“Trent is still very, very young, one day he is a liability, next day the best RB in the world. He will learn and develop to be more consistent.”
– Livvy on the forums.
Decent performance but tbf our defending was shocking at times so many gaps.. a better side would have punished that, sort that out and we should do well this season.#Ynwa ???
We are Liverpool

And thoughts then turned to the UEFA Super Cup…
Forgetful second half. Onto Chelsea.

Imagine Keita and Shaqiri start against Chelsea.

1st win under the belt. Onto the next game. Wednesday vs Chelsea in the Super Cup. We go again! Come on Liverpool! #ThisMeansMore #LFC @LFC
