Leto sent to Greece

Liverpool have been dealt a blow with the news that Argentine midfielder Sebastian Leto has been denied a work permit to play in England this season.

When Leto signed for the Reds last summer, he held an Italian passport, allowing him to freely play in England, but the passport was later withdrawn.

As a result, the Reds have sent the 21-year-old on loan to Greek side Olympiakos on a two-year deal.

Manager Rafael Benitez yesterday explained his disappointment at having Leto’s work permit application rejected by the Department of Work and Pensions.

“I am disappointed and it was a surprise because this is a player who has played in the Champions League and been in the Argentina squad for the Olympic Games,” he told the club’s official website.
