Hillsborough mum Anne Williams passes away

Inspirational Hillsborough campaigner Anne Williams, whose son Kevin was just 15 when he died at Hillsborough, has passed away.

Anne was diagnosed with terminal cancer last October, shortly after the findings of the Hillsborough Independent Panel Report in September. She passes away aged 62.

Anne dedicated her life to proving the truth about Kevin’s death, refusing to collect his death certificate of “accidental death”. Anne took her case to the European Court of Human Rights but was refused a new inquest for her son.

In December last year she was able to travel to the High Court to see the verdicts of accidental death quashed. Witnesses had told how Kevin had asked for his mum 45 minutes after the original 3.15pm cut-off.

Tributes were paid to Anne on twitter:

Rest In Peace Anne, Justice will be done.

My condolences to her family and friends. She was clearly a woman of great courage, strength, and determination. When I think about what those family’s were put through, when I try to imagine the scale of the strength and bravery it must have took to keep on fighting for the truth year after year, decade after decade, all I can feel is the deepest respect and awe for what they have achieved. All of it came from Love.

I hope she is at peace now with here son at her side once more.

No words I could type can ever soften the grief being felt for the loss of of a family member; but I must express my admiration for Anne Williams and her relentless and (eventual) successful work to get to the truth. She never gave up on her boy, so much love. R.i.P.

Seeing Anne Williams constantly getting knocked down but continually coming back fighting was a humbling experience. I can’t imagine the dark days she must have gone through but her determination always shone through and I’m sure she was an inspiration to those who felt the truth would never be heard. I’m glad she got to hear the truth but saddened she never saw justice done and if ever there was a reason to keep on fighting it’s so that we can see the conclusion Anne Williams so wanted but cancer tragically robbed her of. R.I.P. Anne.
