Liverpool FC confirm Kolo Toure signing

kolotoureLiverpool have confirmed they will complete the signing of Manchester City defender Kolo Toure on a free transfer on July 1st 2013.

Toure, 32, has signed a two-year contract after completing a medical and agreeing personal terms with the club.

The Ivorian international has won Premier League titles with Arsenal and Man City, as well as making over 100 appearances for his country.

A statement from Liverpool Football Club reads:

Liverpool Football Club can today announce they have agreed a deal in principal with Kolo Toure to join the club on July 1.

The powerful defender will be registered as a Reds player when his current deal with Manchester City expires.

The statement also points out that Toure will become first Ivorian to play for Liverpool.

Toure isn’t expected to be a first-choice partner for Daniel Agger, but will add some depth and experience in the central defence position, with question marks over the futures of Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates.

The Liverpool Echo report that Kyriakos Papadopoulos remains the top target.

Welcome to Liverpool, Kolo!

Welcome Kolo ! I really don’t know what we can expect from this signing ? But he starts his L.F.C carrer with my full support .

    • Blah

I’m sure he will need your full support too. You’ve been critical in the past

Good experienced signing, squad player, depth, now hopefully papadopoulous signs next.

  • Timm

Great deal!! A free experienced centre back for Liverpool!
Nevertheless I still believe we need at least one more CB, if not two.
My top two choices, would be either Alderweireld/Papadopoulos, and Ilori.
I personally prefer Alderweireld, but this seems unlikely, besides Papadopoulos is quality anyways.
    Kolo welcome to Liverpool! YNWA!

Top marks for doing some early business, but given our track with free transfers recently I am not going to get too excited. What we really need at the back is an aerial presence so hopefully there are more to follow.

    • Razen

      Craig Bellamy

kolo will improve our defence a lot and will make a difference to the club. Next its Kyriakos Papadopulous.

Kolo not the answer carra better than him so 1 step back on my eyes.

Ofcourse its half step back from Carra, but without Carra its three steps back, Kolo makes two and a half step forward again, not bad signing when he’s free transfer!

Kolo is a big improvement on Carra in his last year. He got us knocked out of the Europa league don’t forget.

We shud be goin for yaya not kolo fort we were only goin for younger players get alonso back then.

    • Scott Brown

I think the Carra experience factor made the owners realize they needed experience alongside developing talent in order to have a working defence.

As far as Yaya is concerned, I doubt very seriously that City would let him go for a price that we could afford. You put the transfer fees on top of wages and he is too dear for us. We are signing Kolo exactly for the reasons mentioned in the article. He is a free transfer which means we could afford his wages without the transfer fees. He adds experience and depth to the back 4 without expecting to played every match.

As discussed in another article here on TIA, while all of us would love to see Alonso back in Red, his style of play doesn’t really fit with our squad. Plus, he is not a free transfer. If he were it might be a different story…

Another summer of disappointment. Eriksen to Dortmund, we won’t get Papadopolos, Damiao, Clement Grenier, Tello, Griezmann, Honda, M.Suarez, Aubameyang, Mertens, Bony, Alexis Sanchez, Dzagoev, Alderweireld or Diame. We’ll probably end up with Danny Rose, Ilori, Aspas/Capel/Ince.
Why are we the only ones abiding by financial fair play? Ooredoo come & save us

    • raiteiboy

You play FIFA/ Football Manager too much, man. Real world is not that easy

    • Morris

the transfer window aint even open yet, and you already crying like a woman!! get a grip, and support the new signings,

      • Redblooded Male

        Proper deals are being done:
Neymar to Barca, Moutinho & James Rodriguez to Monaco, Van Wolfswinkel to Norwich, Amorebieta to Fulham, Icardi to Inter, Goetze to Bayern, Santana to Schalke. & we’re dragging our heels again.

        • Iain

dragging our heels???? It’s still only May!

Perfect first signing….brings leadership, experience, and vocal-ness to the defense without . People keep calling for alderwiereld and ilori, but they would stunt wisdom and l. jones growth (I prefer Kelly at RB). Papa wouldn’t be bad if Coates leaves on loan with transfer possible

  • Ucok Silalahi

In terms of experience and skill, he matches our old Carra. But we are going to see if he can match Carra on determination, leadership and commitment. I for one certainly hope so! Welcome aboard, Kolo!

Nice Signing! Waiting to c the next defender/s…Then the attacking players…Very delicate area to deal with..!

  • RobbieisGod

I’m not sure about this one – I’m a little concerned about spending on much in terms of wages on a squad player. But I suppose, and no one else seems to have realised that he started out in a defence midfield position, so I suppose he offers cover there as well as centre half !!!

  • Rederik

Kolo has a wealth of experience which is what we need, I wish him a long and enjoyable career at Liverpool F.C
