Up to 14 out in Anfield clearout

Rafael Benitez will make a massive clearout of player he no longer believes the club needs this summer, ‘˜sweeping away the Anfield dead woiod he inherited from Gerard Houllier’, according to Wednesday’s Mirror.

With Benitez looking to strengthen his squad, but unlikely to get the £30million transfer funding he has requested, it looks as if many players will be scrapped this summer including first team defender Djimi Traore and striker Djibril Cisse.

The newspaper reports that Benitez is after Dutch forward Dirk Kuiyt and lists fourteen players that could be seeing an end to their dwindeling Anfield careers this summer.

Along with Traore and Cisse, Anthony Le Tallec, Florent Sinama Pongolle, Salif Diao, Bruno Cheyrou, Chris Kirkland, Jerzy Dudek, Neil Mellow, Zak Whitbreak, David Raven, Carl Medjani, Darren Potter and Robbie Foy are reportedly being axed.

Many of the above players are out on loan because they’ve failed to regularly break into the first team recently.

Meanwhile today Fernando Morientes joined Robbie Fowler’s fan club by urging the club to offer him an extended contract in the summer.

He said, “I’m very aware of what Robbie has achieved in the past and I know from watching him work, train and play what he can achieve in the future. It’s very important that he gets a new contract.”

Negotiations with Fowler are expected to being shortly.
