Carragher crowned TIA Player of Year

Defender Jamie Carragher has been voted the This Is Anfield Player of the Year Season 2006-07. Members voted over the last three weeks for the top 3 players of the season, and their votes combined with the results of the vote here on the main site, along with votes from the Player of the Month produced a worthy winner who has contributed consistently over the course of the season.

Despite having not won a Player of the Month during the season fans still recognise the consistency of the Bootle boy at the heart of the Reds defence and he gained 546 points from the member vote, well ahead of fellow defenders Steve Finnan (second with 317 points) and Daniel Agger (139 points).

In fact, it shows the high esteem the defensive part of the team is held amongst fans, with Carragher first, Finnan second, Agger third and goalkeeper Pepe Reina in fourth.

Captain Steven Gerrard didn’t have his best season for the club, but still impressed enough to finish just inside the top five. Top goalscorer Peter Crouch almost snook in ahead of him and a surprise came in that Javier Mascherano made seventh place – he took the Player of the Month award for March, April and May as he became a quick fans favourite since his arrival in late January.

The rest of the top ten was made up by Dirk Kuyt (8th), Jermaine Pennant (9th) and Xabi Alonso (10th).
