Summer View From the Rd End: Arsenal

Brian Irvine gets the views of Arsenal supporter John Sheridan ahead of the new season.

Q. View on last season’s performance?

Well below par taking into account other previous seasons achievements. Our domestic form against the so called weaker teams was simply just not good enough and our premature European exit, with the likes of Chelsea, United and Liverpool competing in the semis was somewhat sickening, especially given the fact that we succumbed to a side like PSV (with the greatest of respect).

Q. What’s your view on Henry’s transfer to Barcelona?

It was going to happen one day, but as for the reasons of doing so, his concern over the uncertainty of Arsene Wenger’s future, and his dismay over Mr Dein leaving I don’t buy. Yes, he is s global icon, who I believe is too painfully aware of the need to promote his Mr. Nice Guy image or perhaps that’s just the cynic in me, but overall I believe we shall benefit from such a move, but he will be missed.

Q. What about David Dein leaving?

Not a lot to be honest, he attempted to undermine Hill-Wood And Co. By backing Kroenke which could destabilise the club.

Q. If there is investment at Arsenal what would you like to see happen?

To really just continue ‘œThe Arsenal Way’ I.e. Don’t change anything, we will reap the benefits of the move to The Ashburton in a season or two, but a little extra cash wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.

Q. Do you think Wenger’s reign is coming to an end?

No *Fingers Crossed*

Q. Summer spending – you happy with your acquisitions?

So-so, Bacary Sagna adds experience to the back four, had a decent enough game against PSG, Lukasz Fabianski some ‘˜Friendly’ competition between Jens & Manuel haven’t seen him yet to comment though. Eduardo da Silva reminds me of a certain Bobby Pires, he scores ‘˜At The Right Place-Right Time’ goals with the odd ‘˜Special’ goal added in.

Q. Are you expecting any more transfers?

Yes, another defender and a winger.

Q. One thing you could change at your club?

To no longer be known as a ‘˜selling club’.

Q. Hopes for the coming season?

A trophy or two, it’s been a while…

Q. What about us, how do you think we will fare this coming season?

Usual stuff, competing for titles / trophies and what not.

Q. So, tips for this coming season:

Title: Man Utd or Chelsea I’m afraid
Top Scorer: Going to be bias and say Robin van Persie
Relegated: Derby, Wigan & Birmingham
Player to come from no-where: Rolando Bianchi thought he was a good act at Reggina
Liverpool will finish in: Top four
Arsenal will finish in: Top four
