TIA POM September – Torres

September may not have proved to have been the most fruitful month for Liverpool on the whole, but one man was a particularly shining light, Fernando Torres.

The Reds’ record signing has lead the way with his first hat-trick for the club and a total of six goals in the calendar month, leading to the Spaniard collecting 53% of the vote in the TIA Player of the Month poll.

Torres began the month with two goals in the 6-0 demolition of Derby County and after being rested for the disappointing matches with Portsmouth and Birmingham, grabbed an impressive hat-trick in the League Cup win over Reading. That night at the Madejski Stadium ‘El Nino’ proved once and for all he can handle the physical aspect of the English game and despite being man handled and literally kicked around all night, he showed composure and class for all three of his goals to collect the matchball.

And he finished the month with an all important headed goal at the Kop end to salvage a point against Tottenham last week.

Second in the vote was midfielder Yossi Benayoun who enjoyed a good month after scoring against Reading to open his LFC account and then classily grab the winner as sub at Wigan for a vital three points.

And August winner Alvaro Arbeloa continued to impress and finished third, with Pepe Reina and Javier Mascherano completing the top five.
