Dossena due in Liverpool on Wednesday

Italian left back Andrea Dossena is set to join Liverpool on Wednesday, with his agent claiming “the deal is practically done”. The 26 year old will arrive from Fiorentina for a fee around the £7m mark.

Rafa Benitez hopes Dossena’s arrival will solve the problematic left back position, with John Arne Riise available for transfer and Fabio Aurelio struggling with persistent injuries. A medical is expected to take place on Wednesday and the deal announced before going through officially when the transfer window opens on July 1st.

Dossena’s agent said “Everything is confirmed and we have already exchanged all the documents via fax. The deal is practically done.”

Dossena will be Benitez’s second signing of the summer so far, having already agreed a Bosman move for right full back Phillip Degen from Borrusia Dortmund. With the two full backs being brought in, Benitez is now turning his attentions to other areas and in particular the pursuit of midfielder Gareth Barry.

Reports on Tuesday night suggest Liverpool have raised their bid for Barry to £15m, with a choice of players still on offer – said to be Riise, Peter Crouch, Scott Carson and Jermaine Pennant.

While Dossena and Barry are expected to arrive at Anfield, Xabi Alonso looks set depart to Juventus with talks ongoing there, while goalkeeper Scott Carson has been linked with another loan move, this time to newly promoted West Brom.
