Riise departs for Roma

Left back John Arne Riise has joined AS Roma for a deal worth £4m. The Norweigan has signed a four year deal according to the Italian club.

The 27 year old arrived at Anfield in 2001 and has made over 300 appearances for the club, scoring some memorable goals and supplying Liverpool fans with some happy memories.

However, he has suffered with form in the last two seasons and struggled for competition with Fabio Aurelio and more recently youngster Emiliano Insua. The impending arrival of Andrea Dossena from Udinese and the mistakes in last season’s Champions League semi-finals meant Riise’s departure this summer was inevitable.

Liverpool fans should remember the good times Riise brought to the club; the free-kick against Man United, the Charity Shield goal against Chelsea, the stunning volley at Leverkusen on the road to Istanbul in 2005, the cross for Gerrard’s header in Istanbul, the penalty in Istanbul, the goal in the Nou Camp, various other goals and the added edge he provided down the left side which had been much missing before his arrival under Gerard Houllier.

Everyone here at This Is Anfield wishes John all the best with AS Roma, and thanks for the memories.
