Olympic Watch: Babel on target

Liverpool’s Ryan Babel scored the opening goal in Holland’s 2-2 draw with the USA on Sunday, finishing the rebound from his own header. The Dutch equalised late on and are left needing to defeat Japan, who are already knocked out, on Wednesday and hope the result of Nigeria vs USA goes their way.

Babel started the match as a lone striker and looked more lively than in the opening match. He could return to Liverpool early should Holland fail to progress.

Javier Mascherano was in the Argentina team which defeated Australia 1-0 courtesy of a goal by Lavezzi.

And Lucas Leiva played the full 90 minutes as Brazil hammered New Zealand 5-0. Lucas lined up alongside Man United‘s Anderson in midfield – who scored the opener before Ronaldinho hit 2, Pato and Sobis late on.

Brazil and Argentina have both now secured their place in the quarter finals, which take place on the opening day of the Premier League season next Saturday.
