Carra ‘“ ‘œtonight is different’

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says it’s best to briefly forget any problems with league form and concentrate on the Champions League, as the Reds prepare to face Spanish giants Real Madrid tonight.

The Reds fell seven points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United at the weekend, making any hopes of beating Alex Ferguson’s men to the title fade.

But Carragher has urged his teammates and fans to remain positive and believe both the league and Champions League are within Liverpool’s reach. He says whatever the league form is like, European football is a completely different kettle of fish.

He told reporters, “We still have to believe we can win both competitions, but for now our focus is totally on the Real Madrid game,” said the Reds defender.

“Forget about our league form because when you play a Champions League match the mentality and intensity makes it different.

“I just think it’s a great draw. I always get so excited when the Champions League draw is made and I was pleased from a personal point of view that we drew Madrid because I want to play at the Bernabeu.

“Along with AC Milan, we are the top three most successful sides in European football, so for two of them to be pitted against each other tells you how big this game is.”

Real Madrid vs Liverpool kicks off at 7.45pm at the Bernabeu and you can follow the game live on This Is Anfield. Check back here this evening for more details.
