Fabregas wants Alonso at Arsenal

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas is urging manager Arsene Wenger to step in with a bid for Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso this summer.

Fabregas believes signing his Spanish international teammate would give the Gunners the edge that they have lacked recently that saw them finish fourth in the Premier League and disappointingly miss out on both the FA Cup and European Cup Finals.

“We need someone in the middle to make competition and make a difference, plus give us a new dimension,” said Fabregas.

“I think that is all we need. The rest is perfect.

“Xabi would be great. He’s experienced and can score goals. I’m sure the boss is aware of that fact.”

Alonso has also been linked with a big money move to Real Madrid, but Reds boss Rafa Benitez was quick to dismiss the speculation yesterday insisting Alonso is staying at Anfield.

Arsenal are also rumoured to be in the running to sign Liverpool transfer target Gareth Barry from Aston Villa.
