Skrtel could miss start of season

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel could be ruled out of the start of the new season, according to BBC Sport.

The Slovakian international defender pulled up with a hamstring during the second half of the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Thailand in Bangkok in midweek. He has since flown back to Merseyside for further tests and rest.

The BBC report:

A scan revealed the 24-year-old has strained his hamstring and he is expected to be out for three weeks.

Meanwhile Reds boss Rafa Benitez has apologised to Singapore fans about the absence of Steven Gerrard from tomorrow’s friendly.

He said, “I’m sorry for the fans that we can’t bring Gerrard but he is the captain of the team so he is a key player for the rest of the season.

“I hope the fans can respect the decision. We have other big names like Pepe Reina, Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano and they are all here.”
