Kyrgiakos enjoys solid Reds debut

New Liverpool signing Sotirios Kyrgiakos impressed Reserves team boss John McMahon as he played 46 minutes of the Reserves’ opening league match of the season last night.

Despite a 3-2 defeat to Blackburn Rovers Reserves, the Reds’ second string showed much promise and Kyrgiakos looked commanding and efficient during his first half in action.

The Greek defender, who completed his £1.5million move to Anfield from AEK Athens last week, could be in line to play in Saturday’s Premier League clash away at Bolton for the first team.

McMahon told the club’s official web site after the game, “I thought he came in and showed what he is all about.

“He was commanding at the back and he can be pleased with his first game for the club. He was a big help to the young players and he inspired those around him.”
