Benitez given FA charge

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has been charged by the Football Association for impropper conduct after comments made after the Reds’ opening day 2-1 defeat to Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Benitez fumed at referee Phil Dowd after Liverpool were denied two late penalties, including a blatant push on striker Andriy Voronin.

After the game he told the BBC cameras, “The decisions were very poor. Everyone could see the first one was a penalty. The second one was handball but we knew it would not be a penalty.”

Benitez has until 15th September to respond to the charges.

Assistant manager Sammy Lee was hit with similar FA charges last week after Dowd dismissed him in the game’s dying seconds for his demonstrations on the touchline to fourth official Stuart Atwell.
