Liverpool vs Debreceni

It’s the start of the European road for Rafa Benitez’s men with the ambition of making it to their third European Cup Final in the space of five years.

This year’s final will be held at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium in Spain on Wednesday, 22nd May 2010 and the Reds kick-off their campaign at home to Hungarian side Debreceni.

Debreceni are the first Hungarian club to qualify for the Champions League in 14 years and make their debut in the competition after defeatin Levski Sofia 4–1 on aggregate in the third qualifying round.

Liverpool remain without the injured trio of Nabil El Zahr, Daniel Agger and Alberto Aquilani, although Fabio Aurelio stands in line to play after missing the start of the season with a knee injury.

You won’t recognize many of Debreceni’s players, but look out for goalkeeper Vukašin Radomir Poleksi?, who has played for both FR Yugoslavia (2002) and Montenegro (2007) at national level.

The club were dealt a major blow this week with the news that their striker László Bodnár was given a one-year suspended prison sentence after causing the death of a cyclist when driving fast at the end of August.

The game kicks off at 7.45pm on Wednesday, 16th September and stay tuned to This Is Anfield for more previews, pre-match discussion and team news.
