Mascherano and Agger injury latest

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez hopes to have midfielder Javier Mascherano available for this Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Mascherano missed Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Fiorentina and only made a substitute appearance in last Saturday’s 6-1 thrashing of Hull City at Anfield after picking up a hamstring strain.

But Benitez now hopes the Argentine will be fit enough to start Sunday’s trip to West London.

He said, “Javier trained today so hopefully he will be fit for Sunday. For us he is a key player. He is a very good worker in the middle and he can keep the balance of the team.”

Meanwhile Benitez added that he has been impressed with Daniel Agger’s progress after suffering from a back injury and hinted the Danish international could be included in the squad this weekend.

“Daniel trained today. I watched the DVD of the reserve game and he did well,” continued Benitez. “Maybe he will have a chance for Sunday – we will see.

“He is a player who can defend really well but he also has quality in possession. It will be good to have him back.”

Chelsea vs Liverpool gets underway at 4pm this Sunday, 4th October and it’s live on Sky Sports.
