“It’s merely a blip” says Gillett as Rafa gets full backing

Liverpool co-owner George Gillett says he believes the club’s current run of bad form on the pitch “is just a blip” and has given his full support to under-fire boss Rafa Benitez to pull the club through the struggle.

The Reds face a massive game tonight when they take on Tottenham at Anfield. Victory would pull Liverpool to being just one point off the lucrative fourth spot in the Premier League. However, defeat and the Reds would face an uphill battle to pull back seven points and qualify for the Champions League.

And with former Liverpool players and fans calling for Benitez’s head, Gillett says the Spaniard has his, and the club’s, full support.

‘We believe if you were to put a list together of the top five coaches, managers in the world, he would definitely be on that list for us,’ said Gillett.

‘And we think he’s been tossed a curve ball by circumstance, injuries and so forth.

‘I think that’s been a real challenge to the coach. He’s had to really make some innovations and play some players out of position and so forth.

‘And notwithstanding that, they’ve generally played with a lot of passion. I really believes it’s a blip.’

Gillett and business partner Tom Hicks gave Benitez a new five-year contract at the end of last season.

Liverpool vs Spurs gets underway at 8pm tonight and is live on Sky Sports.
