Kuyt in fitness race for Thursday

Dirk Kuyt will undergo intensive treatment on the calf injury he suffered in the opening minutes of the second half during the win over Burnley on Sunday.

Kuyt started the match up front in the absence of Fernando Torres and David Ngog and now faces a race to be fit for Thursday’s Europa League semi final second leg with Atletico Madrid.

Speaking after the match, Rafa Benitez said “We have to see how he feels. He’s working hard with the doctor and physios. It’s a small problem in his calf but we have to wait.”

With Ngog also doubtful with a back injury he suffered in the first leg, Benitez will be hoping his reliable Dutchman will recover in time to lead the line, with Ryan Babel and Dani Pacheco his only other alternate options.

The 4-0 win over Burnley has clearly given The Reds confidence going into Thursday’s match, skipper Steven Gerrard scored two and says the squad are looking forward to the match. He told the official site today “The players are positive about Thursday night, I can guarantee that. We are up for it and we need to give every bit of sweat and blood out on that pitch.”
