Fabio Aurelio will leave Liverpool this summer, it has been confirmed.
The Brazilian left back’s contract expires this summer and a new deal could not be agreed. Rafa Benitez said “We had been trying to work something out with regards an extension but it was a pity that we couldn’t.”
It is believed Liverpool were only willing to offer the injury-prone former Valencia man a ‘pay as you play’ deal.
Benitez praised his four years service to the club, “Fabio is a top professional, a great player and a really good lad. It has been a pleasure having him here and we really will miss him.”
Signed on a free transfer from Valencia in 2006, Aurelio has seen numerous injuries interrupt his career at Anfield, making 71 league appearances, scoring 3 goals. In all competitions he made 102 appearances for LFC.
Aurelio will be most fondly remembered for his two free-kicks at the end of the 09/10 season at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge.
With only Emiliano Insua as a recognised first team left back, that position now becomes urgently in need of strengthening this summer.
Good luck for the future Fabio, from all at This Is Anfield.
