Reds pre-season opener postponed

Liverpool’s first pre-season friendly, due to take place on Saturday evening, was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

Torrential rain in Austria throughout the day meant the game against Saudi Arabian Champions Al-Halil had to be postponed at the last minute.

It means Liverpool’s pre-season campaign won’t get underway until Wednesday – when they play Grasshoppers in Switzerland.

On the postponement, a disappointed Roy Hodgson told the club’s official web site, “The referee had no choice. Everyone tried very hard to get the game on but it wasn’t possible. We wanted to play, Al -Hilal wanted to play, but to play a football match you need the ball to be rolling properly around the pitch.

“It wasn’t doing that and so it was impossible. We tried everything but you can’t fight the weather and even if we had started the game it would have been played at the limit, and I’m not sure we would have finished it.”
