Fernando Torres has been forced to pull out of the Spain squad for their forthcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Lithuania and Scotland with a groin strain.

The striker pulled up with the injury in the 10th minute of Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Blackpool at Anfield on Sunday and was taken off for David N’gog.

The 26-year-old will now undergo close examination on the problem by Liverpool’s medical staff, with two weeks until the Reds play again – away at Everton.

“Fernando was assessed earlier today at Melwood and underwent a scan this afternoon,” said Dr Peter Brukner, Liverpool’s Head of Sports Medicine and Sports Science.

“He will have intensive treatment over the next couple of weeks but it is too early to say if he will be fit for the game against Everton.”

Torres is having a torrid year with injuries, having had a low-key World Cup with his country due to a knee injury.
