Sunderland target danger man Carroll

Sunderland will aim to keep Liverpool striker Andy Carroll out of the game when the two sides meet at the Stadium of Light this Sunday.

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce has targeted the Reds’ new number nine as the danger man to mark, after struggling to keep him at bay in previous meetings against Newcastle (Carroll’s former club).

In his pre-match press conference Bruce said of Carroll, “We know all about him and the one thing about him is you have to physically stand up to him, and I am very confident the lads we have got playing will be physically able to do that.

“In my day, there were, 10, 12 of them that you could reel off, old fashioned English centre-forwards.

Carroll spent just six months in the Premier League after a season in the Championship with the Magpies, before his £35million transfer to Anfield in January.

Bruce added, “He has had a fantastic 18 months and I genuinely wish him well – after Sunday, of course.

“He’s a throwback to the old days. We just hope we can defend well against him and play well against him, which we will have to because we know he’s a handful.

Sunderland vs Liverpool gets underway at 1.30pm this Sunday, 20th March 2011.
