Spearing taking Europa quest one game at a time

Jay Spearing says Liverpool must not worry about what other clubs are doing and concentrate on winning their four remaining Premier League games of the season, one game at a time.

The Reds’ recent resurgence of form sees them in a promising position to leapfrog Tottenham and finish fifth in the league, earning a Europa League place.

Should Liverpool beat Newcastle at home this Sunday, and Spurs lose to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge later in the afternoon – it will then be in Liverpool’s hands to take fifth place, with the Reds meeting Spurs at Anfield in the penultimate game of the campaign.

Spearing told BBC Radio Merseyside, “We can’t look too far ahead. We can’t keep worrying about other people.

“We’ve Newcastle at home on Saturday and we need to get three points there and keep the pressure on Tottenham.”

Spearing added that something has finally clicked within the team and the performances are beginning to show.

“Right from the first whistle we seem to be gelling together and working hard for one another and as soon as we lose the ball we’re fighting to get it back again,” he continued.

“It’s the desire of the side now that we want to keep going until the end of the season and end it on a high.

“The club seems to be flying at the moment and we’re keeping it going and it’s showing in the performances.

“You can see the team is all together and we’re working hard for one another and that’s the main thing.”
