West Brom 2-1 Liverpool

Match Summary

Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for Europe took a blow on Saturday afternoon when they were subjected to a 2-1 defeat by Roy Hodgson’s West Brom at the Hawthorns.

Steven Gerrard missed the trip through injury, with Kenny Dalglish opting for a strong attack of Dirk Kuyt, Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.

However, the Reds were dealt big blows early on – losing both Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger to injury.

Martin Skrtel’s header from a corner had given Liverpool the lead five minutes into the second half, but two penalties from Chris Brunt, the second just two minutes from time, won the points for the Baggies.

Sotirios Kyrgiakos pulled down Peter Odemwingie to concede the first just after the hour mark, before Pepe Reina later brought down the Baggies strike to concede the second.

It was a bad day at the office for Liverpool, who looked uncomfortable and West Brom being able to control the game to help themselves to three precious points away from relegation.
