Liverpool look set to complete the surprise signing of former goalkeeper Brad Friedel on a one-year contract.
The 40-year-old American is thought to have snubbed a new deal at Aston Villa in favour of returning to Anfield to be Pepe Reina’s understudy.
Fridel joined Liverpool from Columbus Crew in 1997, making 31 appearances before leaving to Blackburn Rovers in 2000.
Friedel made his 226th conseuctive Premier League appearance against the Reds in Villa’s 1-0 victory on Sunday.
Liverpool are thought to have beaten Tottenham in the race for his signature, with Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones now expected to depart Anfield this summer.
