Skrtel to miss start of season

Defender Martin Skrtel will miss the start of the new Premier League season with a calf injury that has hindered his pre-season preparations.

Skrtel, an ever-present last season, had hoped to be back to fitness for the opening day against Sunderland in just over a week but suffered a set-back recently and could now miss the following clash with Arsenal too.

“I suffered an injury setback on Friday,” said Skrtel. “I felt strong pain in my leg so I am back with the doctors receiving treatment.

“I really don’t know how long will it take to heal. I am doing my best to be back as soon as possible.”

With Skrtel sidelined, concerns over Daniel Agger’s long-term fitness, and Jamie Carragher now 33, mananger Kenny Dalglish could now expedite attempts to sign a centre back this summer.

The Reds have been linked with Bolton’s Gary Cahill and Birmingham’s Scott Dann this summer.
