Shelvey at the double as Liverpool’s young boys steal the show

Young Boys of Bern 3-5 Liverpool
Thursday, 20th September 2012
Stade de Suisse, Bern (Switzerland)
Europa League Group A, Matchday 1

Andre Wisdom, Sebastian Coates and Jonjo Shelvey (2) were all on target for Liverpool as they edged Switzerland’s Young Boys in the first Europa League group match of the season.

Brendan Rodgers handed debuts to youngsters Suso and Wisdom and new signing Oussama Assaidi in a team with an average of 24.3 years.

A Juhani Ojala own goal opened the scoring early on for Rodgers’ men – a side that had eleven changes from the team that drew at Sunderland at the weekend.

Jose Enrique failed to clear his lines to allow Young Boys back in the game.

Wisdom’s goal – Liverpool’s second of the game – came on his debut for the first team from a Nuri Sahin corner shortly before half time. The young defender rose above his man to head home.

It was substitute Jonjo Shelvey who stole the headlines with two well taken goals late on.

Jordan Henderson put in an impressive display in midfield.
