Europa League, Matchday 3; Anfield
Stewart Downing marked his return to first team action with Liverpool with a goal to remember at the Kop end to help the Reds to a 1-0 victory over Russian side Anzhi on Thursday night.
The Reds were relieved to break the deadlock in the tense game against Gus Hiddink’s side, a much needed victory in their Europa League campaign following the home defeat to Udinese earlier in the month.
The win moves Brendan Rodgers’ side to the top of the group, but with several key players playing 90 minutes ahead of Sunday’s Merseyside Derby supporters will be left hoping the victory doesn’t backfire against Everton.
