Luis Suarez’s former Ajax teammate Vurnon Anita has said he is not surprised by the love/hate relationship English football has with Liverpool’s Uruguayan striker.
Anita and Suarez came face to face on Sunday as the Reds drew 1-1 with Anita’s new club Newcaslte.
The Dutch international said the way Suarez plays hasn’t changed since his days in the Dutch Eredivisie and is happy to have stayed in touch with the 25-year-old Uruguayan.
“In Holland it was the same. I know him very well and I know he plays like that,” Anita told the BBC.
“If he’s on your team you’re happy, but if you play against him you hate him.”
“He’s a very nice guy. He likes to joke with people,” he added. “He’s enjoying himself in England. We speak a lot and we keep in touch.”
