Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has called for Liverpool fans to make Anfield an intimidating place for visitors Zenit St Petersburg in the second leg of their Europa League tie on Thursday night.
The Russians come to Anfield with a 2-0 lead over Brendan Rodgers’ side, who will be dumped out of the competition if they cannot turn the tie around.
Skrtel knows all about the famous Anfield European nights in which the Kop has become a twelfth man for the Reds and spurred them onto famous victories down the years.
Today he told the club’s official website he expects another electric night in front of the fans on Thursday.
He said, “The atmosphere at Anfield in European games is always special and the game on Thursday will be even more because we lost the first game and the crowd feel we need their help. I’m pretty sure they will help us.
“In football everything is possible. We’ll play at Anfield – we know the fans will be behind us and they’ll help us to get into the next round.
“It’s not going to be easy but if we can get an early goal that will help us a lot. Then just try to play our game, create chances and take them. We believe we can beat them at home.”
Second half goals from Hulk and Sergei Semak sunk Liverpool when the Reds went to Eastern Europe last Thursday evening to trail the tie by two goals.
Liverpool vs Zenit St Petersburg gets underway at 8.05pm on Thursday, 21st February 2013. Tickets have now sold out for the game.
