Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen will undergo shoulder surgery this week and therefore will miss the final two months of his first season at the club.
The Welsh midfielder was withdrawn at half-time of the defeat to Southampton on Saturday after looking in discomfort. Last week manager Brendan Rodgers explained how he had been struggling with the injury since October.
Allen, 23, arrived from Swansea City for £15m last summer and initially started very well. But his dip in form coincided with the shoulder injury.
Liverpool have now decided to operate now in order to ensure Allen is fully fit to begin pre-season in July.
Allen’s absence will mean more opportunities for Jordan Henderson and Jonjo Shelvey. It could also mean Suso will not be loaned out now this season.
