Gerrard blasts trophyless Everton

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has hit back at Merseyside rivals Everton about their ambitions to simply finish above the Reds for the second season in a row – for the first time since 1937.

Earlier this week Blues defender Sylvain Distin took to Twitter to say he is feeling sad for Liverpool fans after a season without trophies, or a high place league finish at Anfield.

Gerrard though was only too quick to point out the lack of trophies Everton have won this season too, and claims they don’t have the mentality to go and win any anytime soon.

He is quoted in the Metro as saying, “Everton haven’t won anything have they? It’s nothing to finish sixth or seventh in this league.

“In the big picture, is not winning trophies important? Maybe not.

“If Everton finish above us and their supporters are really happy and their players and everyone is really happy, then that’s up to them.”

Everton boss David Moyes celebrates his tenth season with the club this year, having won a grand total of nothing with the Goodison Park club.

Liverpool vs Everton gets underway at 1.30pm on Sunday, 5th May 2013.
